MAPLE LOUNGE: With pride in our country's musical past and present at an all-time high, the timing is perfect for this new series (no cover!), held every Wednesday in the nice upstairs Rivoli space. Maple Lounge will feature a singer/songwriter playing a 45-minute set at 10 p.m., preceded and followed by all Canadian music and videos in the club. The launch party was a big success, attracting such top Canuck talent as DAN BRYK, MOLLY JOHNSON, LORRAINE SEGATO, ANDY MAIZE (SKYDIGGERS), KURT SWINGHAMMER and CHRIS WARREN. They enjoyed the charming set of REID JAMIESON, one of the city's most promising young singer/songwriters. He played most of the tracks on his new eight-song CD, The Noise In My Chest. Reid will play every Wednesday in October, followed by JASON PLUMB of (THE WALTONS fame) in November, and PETE ELKAS (LOCAL RABBITS) in December.

TRIUMPH: For around a decade (1977-87), this Toronto hard rock trio ranked right alongside RUSH at the top of the ladder, scoring platinum-selling albums and even the occasional hit single. A definite career highlight was their inclusion on the bill of the U.S. Festival in California alongside VAN HALEN, SCORPIONS, MOTLEY CRUE and OZZY. Over a half-million rock fans attended, and Triumph's explosive (literally) set is now captured on a new live CD/DVD, Live At The US Festival (TML/Universal). It is virtually a Greatest Hits collection too, featuring the likes of "Magic Power," "Rock 'n Roll Machine," and "Never Surrender."

GODDO: Rush and Triumph were not the only Toronto hard rock trio to make a splash in the '70s. Goddo had a more basic, meat 'n potatoes sound, but they also had a sexiness and sense of humour, two attributes Rush were never accused of having. Goddo are still out there gigging in the local clubs, and their fans now have a new album of original material to enjoy. Kings Of The Stoned Age (on Bullseye Records) features the original lineup, and GREG GODOVITZ's songs remain unpretentious and fun. JEFF HEALEY and BOB SEGARINI help out on a couple of tracks.
